2018 marks the 10th anniversary of a partnership between the EU and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to promote long-term peace, security and effective governance in the country.
Based on the EU comprehensive approach, AMISOM comprises political, diplomatic, civilian, military, humanitarian and development dimensions, all of which are integral components of the mission. The EU is one of AMISOM’s biggest donors with more than €1.5 billion allocated over the past 10 years through the African Peace Facility (APF).,
- The EU's financial support to AMISOM includes, for instance, three EU military/civilian missions in the framework of the EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP):
- The European Military Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM-Somalia) which has contributed to the training of 5,700 Somali soldiers to date);
- The European Union Naval Force Atlanta (EU NAVFOR Somalia), countering piracy and armed robbery off the coasts of Somalia ;
- The civilian maritime capacity building Mission (EUCAP Somalia), contributing to the establishment and capacity building of maritime civilian law enforcement capability in Somalia.
