On 16 October 2019, the European Commission hosted the 3rd meeting of the EU-Africa High Level Group of Personalities. Over 30 renowned experts and thinkers from both Africa and Europe gathered in Brussels to discuss the potential of Africa’s digital revolution.

Africa is currently undergoing rapid changes with some African countries being among the fastest growing countries in the world. Especially the digital economy creates opportunities for the people in Africa, contributing to innovation, trade, job creation and development. However, many challenges still need to be addressed. 700 million people in Africa still do not have access to the internet.

The participants agreed on the need to foster a digital partnership between Africa and Europe to fully tap the potential of these new development dynamics. Investments in Africa’s digital infrastructure are needed to support increased connectivity. This is also a key element of the new Africa-Europe Alliance on Sustainable Investment and Jobs

The EU-Africa High Level Group of Personalities for effective and strategic EU-Africa relations is a joint initiative by Friends of Europe, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation as well as the ONE Campaign. Its major objective is to foster effective and strategic cooperation between Africa and Europe in various policy areas such as development cooperation, trade, migration, climate change or digitalisation.
