With the aim of promoting digitalisation and regional interconnectivity, the Central Africa Backbone (CAB) project will provide improved broadband internet access within both the Central African Republic (CAR) and its neighbouring countries, notably Cameroon and the Congo.

The initiative is supported through the EU’s ‘blending’ mechanism, meaning that EU grants are used to leverage further investment. The EU has contributed €17 million to this project, leading to a total investment of €33.7 million.

In accordance with the objectives of the Africa-Europe Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Jobs, the project will support private sector development in the region by establishing crucial ICT infrastructure, thus reducing transaction costs, boosting the national economies and creating jobs especially for young people.
