From 10- 11 February, the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The African Union Assembly comprises Heads of State and Government of all the 55 African countries.
The Summit was held under the 2019 theme: “The Year of Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons: Towards Durable Solutions to Forced displacement in Africa”.
The event also marked the end of Rwanda’s chairpersonship of the Union and President Kagame handed over to President Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi of Egypt.
Key points on the agenda included the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), including Tariff Liberalization, the Institutional Reform of the AU, and progress on Agenda 2063.
In the margins of the Summit, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy / Vice-President of the Commission Federica Mogherini was as well in Addis to meet the African Union Commission’s Chairperson, together with Commissioner Neven Mimica, to discuss how to further deepen cooperation between the European Union and the African Union.
