Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme III and IV

The Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme supports higher education cooperation between countries in Africa. It provides financial support to partnerships of African higher education institutions for the organisation of students and staff mobility in high quality master and doctoral programmes within African countries.

The programme is expected to increase the employability of students, improve the quality and relevance of higher education in Africa and to strengthen the modernisation and internationalisation of African higher education institutions.

The "Continental education strategy for Africa” (2016-2025) aims to build an integrated continent through a harmonised education system where intra-African mobility and skills portability are key. In this respect, academic mobility programmes plays an important role at different levels.

Mobility can have a positive impact on the individuals, by strengthening their skills, their employability and personal development. Besides, the mobility of academic staff is beneficial for improving the quality of teaching and research. Through exchanges of experiences, university staff can modernise their teaching methods and pedagogy.

Therefore, while mobility schemes significantly benefit individuals, they also impact positively institutions and foster institutional changes and play an important role in education-to-employment strategies.

Such a role was recognised at the 5th AU-EU Summit of 2017, where African and European Heads of States and Governments committed to further “invest in people” and to support "concrete initiatives in terms of recognition of qualifications, partnerships between institutions and mobility of young students, staff and researchers". 

The overall objective of the scheme is to enhance human capital development in Africa.

More specifically, it aims to increase the employability of students, improve the quality and relevance of higher education in Africa and to strengthen the modernisation and internationalisation of African higher education institutions

In the medium term, the scheme is expected to support the harmonisation of programmes and curricula between participating institutions and the development of mechanisms for the recognition of credits/degrees and qualifications, thereby contributing to the realisation of the “African Higher Education and Research Space”.

The action is implemented through calls for proposals aimed at selecting partnerships of higher education institutions which will organise students and staff mobility between them.

The main activities to be implemented by the selected partnerships are:

  • the organisation of the mobility (e.g. partnership management and communication activities, promotion and dissemination, selection of scholarship holders, etc.)
  • the implementation of mobility flows of selected scholarship holders, including the provision of services to mobile students/staff (language courses, housing services, administrative support upon arrival, etc.), the development of communication and information strategy, reporting and analysis of results.
