The right to peace in the West African states is the theme of an upcoming workshop organized by the European Commission on 25 March 2018 in Abuja, Nigeria. Representatives of African civil society organisations (CSOs) will exchange views and recommendations on their role in mediation, conflict resolution and electoral violence prevention. Through this interactive session, the European Commission aims to foster a meaningful discussion between civil society organisations, the Economic Community of West African States and their European partners. It will also provide an opportunity to exchange views on the EU’s concrete contribution to peace and security in West Africa.
Since its creation in 2004, the African Peace Facility (APF) has been playing a critical role in backing African peace and security efforts. Through this instrument, the EU is at the forefront of international support to the African peacebuilding agenda by providing substantial and predictable funding to the African Union and African Regional Economic Communities – including ECOWAS – in their peacebuilding efforts.
