Launch of West and Central African Research & Education Network (WACREN)

Launch of West and Central African Research & Education Network (WACREN)

Tuesday, 10 April, 2018

The WACREN network has been officially launched during its annual conference, held in Lomé, Togo, from 15-16 March 2018. This represents a major milestone for the development of high-capacity internet networks for research and education across Africa, supported by the AfricaConnect2 project.

The WACREN network will initially provide a 10 Gbps (Gigabits per second) link from Lagos, Nigeria to London, UK where it interconnects with the pan-European GÉANT network and from there to over 100 countries and 50 million researchers worldwide. An additional link will be out from Lagos terminating in Accra, Ghana, which will form the building blocks for the WACREN backbone in support of R&E communities across the entire Central and Western part of the African continent.

The objectives of WACREN are the promotion and establishment of interconnections between national research and education networks in West and Central Africa to form a high-capacity regional Research and Education Network (REN).

The European Union (EU) supports this process through AfricaConnect2 – an EUR 26.6 million project for a period of 3.5 years, with EUR 20 million funded by the EU through the Pan-African Programme.
