Future Challenges

  • Joint AUC-EC Task Force Meeting in October 2009, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The main obstacles to the implementation of the partnership were divulged:
    • The scope of the partnership is far too broad, there is a need to focus on a smaller niche
    • There is no added value from the partnership in the context of global efforts to achieve the MDGs
    • Serious weaknesses in participation and engagement, and a lack of expertise and awareness at country level
    • International community not on track to meet its financial commitments to Africa
    • More needs to be done to meet aid effectiveness requirements, as agreed in Paris and Accra
    • African countries need to fulfill financial commitments, such as allocating 15% of national budgets for health (Abuja Declaration)
    • Gender mainstreaming needs to be included
  • Joint AUC-EC Task Force Meeting in March 2010 in Brussels. There was a discussion on including wider stakeholders as African civil society has yet to be included in any Joint Expert Group meetings.
