Science, technology and innovation
EU-Africa cooperation on science, technology and innovation (STI) is cross-cutting in nature, contributing to the attainment of all other socio-economic development objectives, including Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets. The new SDGs replaced the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and have a broader sustainability agenda tackling root causes of poverty as well as the universal need for development. Investments in STI are vital to promote growth and employment, improve competitiveness and identify and address pressing global societal challenges such as climate change, affordable renewable energy and energy efficiency, infectious diseases or food and nutrition security.
Key objectives in this area of cooperation are reinforced cooperation between research communities and the creation of joint academic research programmes and the development of a long-term, jointly funded and managed research and innovation partnership with a focus on food and nutrition security and sustainable agriculture
Main achievements and milestones on joint academic research programmes include the successful launch of the African Union Research Grants Programme supporting collaborative research to implement the priorities of the African Union Science & Technology policy, the funding of 21 research grants in December 2013 under the ACP Science &Technology programme, and the funding of some 565 collaborative research projects involving 1315 participants from 45 African countries through the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7) (2007-2013).
Moreover, the The EU-Africa High-Level Policy Dialogue (HLPD) on science, technology and innovation (STI) was established as a platform for better common understanding and build mutual trust and ownership, define and agree on shared priorities of mutual benefit for current and future collaboration and thus to strengthening the overall cooperation framework in science, research, technology and innovation.
