On 25 May 2009, the African Union (AU) celebrated the 46th annual Africa Day. On that day in 1963, 32 African leaders meeting in Addis Ababa created the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which in 2002 became the AU.
Africa Day is celebrated throughout Africa and elsewhere - this year, notably in Brussels and Bucharest. Peace and security issues – a priority in the AU’s strategy for 2009–12 – were at the centre of the day's events.
This year, the theme for the day was "Towards A United, Peaceful & Prosperous Africa".
