Achievements/milestones

  • Cooperation in the area of electoral observation: support to AU's Electoral Assistance Fund (€1M), AU observers' participation in EU Parliamentary elections in June and in Germany, as well as training of AU observers in EU EOMs.
  • EC funded workshop will be organised to develop a common approach on the "Platform on democratic governance and human rights" with key stakeholders, including experts from African capitals and 30 civil society representatives from Africa and Europe.
  • Joint initiatives similar to the April 2009 Africa-EU Civil Society Human Rights dialogue, which tackled difficult issues such as torture and the freedom of association, or the joint Africa-EU event on women and conflict (UNSCR 1325) organized in the margins of the UNGA in September will be planned in other areas as well.
  • Political and financial support for the African Peer Review Mechanism is provided through an increased Governance Incentive Tranche (€2.7 billion) and support to 'national programmes of action'. The EC is contributing € 2 M to the UNDP managed Trust Fund to support the APRM Secretariat and has provided support to some national APRM Structures.
  • EC-sponsored Colloquium on culture and creativity as vectors for development (April 2009) has been organized. 38 African ministers participated in the colloquium, which yielded concrete recommendations for reinforcing actions in the area of culture and development.
