The 3rd Africa EU Summit took place on 29-30 November 2010, in Tripoli, Libya. The Summit shaped the future relations between two continents and adopted The 3rd Africa-EU Summit declaration and the 2nd Action Plan 2011-2013.

This plan builds up on experience gained from the 1st Action Plan, and political objectives enshrined into the 2007 Joint Africa-EU Strategy (JAES) which defines the long-term policy orientations between the two continents, based on a shared vision and common principles.

 

Success story

The days of walking long distances in search of clean water are now a thing of the past for most inhabitants of Mubende, Hoima and Masindi. One Hoima resident explained the change and what it means for her: “Water is no longer the need I wake up to and fall to sleep with. Once hard, life is now soft!” she said. Through the Mid-Western Towns Water and Sanitation Project, direct access to safe water has been made possible for her and 25,000 others.

Access to sanitation, hygiene and safe water are priorities for the European Commission. It sees these as the keys to improved health and enhanced livelihoods. Water and sanitation programmes, which help build infrastructure for drinking and waste water systems, and provide basic sanitation and hygiene, receive almost €400 million per year in EU funding.
